Buying a Kemppi Welder? Run This 6-Point Checklist Before You Approve the PO

We do a fair amount of round pipe welding, and last year I was tasked with replacing two aging MIG units. The brand was already decided based on our existing Kemppi stock, but the process of justifying the spend went deeper than comparing list prices.

If you're in the market for a Kemppi welder for sale, you'll see a wide range of specs. But before you sign off on a purchase order, run through this checklist. I've been tracking our procurement costs for about six years, and this is the 6-point version I've landed on after a few expensive lessons.

It's built for someone who has to answer for the budget, not just the weld quality.

When This Checklist Applies

This is for buying a machine for a specific job or shop floor role. It's not for a massive fleet upgrade with a formal RFP process. If you're just replacing a unit one-for-one or adding capacity for a new type of work, these are the steps I use to keep the total cost from creeping up on me.

Point 1: Check the Machine Weight Before You Plan the Installation

This sounds obvious, but it gets skipped. We almost bought a unit that was 30 kilograms heavier than the one it was replacing. On paper, it was a minor spec difference. In practice, it meant our existing boom mount wasn't rated for it, and we'd have needed to buy new mounting hardware and rent a lift to install it.

Read the spec sheet closely. Welding machine weight isn't just about transportation. It determines mounting options, cart requirements, and whether your staff can actually move it around the shop without a crane.

Check the weight in the manual against the physical unit at a dealer if you can. I've seen spec sheets be optimistic.

Point 2: Spec the Wire for the Joint, Not Just the Machine

The wrong filler metal will make a new machine look like a lemon. When we phased out an old MIG unit for round pipe, we initially kept the same wire spec to save time on the changeover. Bad call. The weld penetration was subpar, and we had to re-qualify the procedures. That cost us about a week of production and a rework bill that ate into the savings of buying the machine.

Set up the wire and gas specs before you install the machine, and make sure it aligns with the pipe grade and wall thickness you're running. This is particularly critical for round pipe welding machines, where joint fit-up varies a lot.

Point 3: Separate the Machine Cost from the Setup Cost

The quote for the welder might be clean, but the invoice will be dirty. When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that setup and accessories added roughly 15% to the base price of every new machine. That includes torches, liners, a cart, and the technician time to integrate it with our existing Kemppi system.

Get an itemized quote for the complete installation. Ask what's in the box versus what's a 'recommended add-on.' A lot of those add-ons aren't optional in practice.

Point 4: Follow the Manual's Torch Maintenance Schedule

Most of my 'budget overruns' in the past came from consumables. When I tracked orders in our procurement system, I noticed a pattern: the shops that burned through parts fastest were the ones treating the torch service schedule as a suggestion. A weld shop's night shift is a special pressure cooker, but this is where the wire can drag and cause the liner to wear out prematurely.

It's a low-trust conversation to have with the welding team, but it's cheaper to buy a consumables kit per schedule than to replace a torch assembly because it ran dry and overheated. The line I use is simple: five minutes of cleaning beats five hours of downtime later.

Point 5: Interview the Team Who'll Run the Night Shift

One topic that seems unrelated to the equipment itself is staffing. With many shops running welder nights jobs, the person making the buying decision often isn't on site at 2 a.m. The purchasing spec is one thing; the machine's actual behavior during a long production run is another. If you don't currently run night shifts, ignore this. But if you do, ask them what they'd change about the current setup. They'll tell you exactly which features on the new machine are worth paying for, and which are just bells and whistles that will never get used.

Point 6: Recalculate Total Cost Over 5 Years, Not 5 Months

The core of my job is total cost, not the sticker price. The purchase price matters, but the operating cost is where the real difference lies.

Here's the simplified math I use:

  • Purchase price + Accessories / estimated service life = Annual capital cost
  • Consumables per year + Estimated maintenance per year + Estimated energy draw = Annual running cost

The first number is the one that gets negotiated. The second set is the one you'll feel in the P&L later. A more expensive machine that's reliable and saves wire saves more than a slightly cheaper one that goes down during a crunch.

A Note on 'Portable' Machines

One thing I see from the outside—and I've fallen for this myself—is assuming a lighter machine is inherently better option. It's not always true. If you're running a heavier duty cycle at a fixed station, a lighter case might mean a compact internal layout that's harder to repair. I've only worked with our specific Kemppi models, so I can't speak to the full lineup, but I've learned to ask about repairability before I get excited about a weight reduction. Common Buying Mistakes

  • Ignoring the duty cycle rating: A machine rated for 60% duty cycle might be fine for light fabrication but won't survive a full shift of heavy pipe welding.
  • Skipping the torch evaluation: You'll spend more on torches and consumables over the machine's life than the machine itself if you guess wrong on the wire delivery system.
  • Not checking the dealer's repair turnaround: The local dealer we use has a 48-hour turnaround on electronics. A cheaper remote dealer quoted a 2-week turnaround. For a production shop, that's lost revenue, not just a delay.
