Kemppi Welding Equipment: Answers From Someone Who Handles Rush Orders

I coordinate emergency equipment deliveries for a supplier that carries Kemppi. When a machine dies on a Friday afternoon and a contract starts Monday, I'm the one looking for a practical fix. That shapes how I look at welding equipment. I care more about what keeps a job moving than about brochure specs. These are the questions I answer most often.

Is Kemppi welding equipment worth the extra cost?

It's tempting to compare welding machines by peak amps and price. The cheaper unit seems to do the same job for half the money. Sometimes, for occasional light work, that's the right choice.

But identical-looking specs can produce very different results on a real job. The two numbers that matter are duty cycle and support. A machine rated at 200 amps with a 60 percent duty cycle is not the same as one rated at 200 amps with a 25 percent duty cycle. When a thermal cutoff stops a long weld, the cost of that interruption can be higher than the price difference between machines.

TIG welder description: when is TIG the right process?

A TIG welder description usually starts with what TIG stands for: tungsten inert gas. In formal terms, it's gas tungsten arc welding, or GTAW. A non-consumable tungsten electrode creates the arc, and you can add filler rod by hand if the joint needs it. Shielding gas, typically argon, protects the weld area.

TIG gives you precise heat control, clean welds, and good results on thin material. It is the process people mean when they need a polished stainless steel joint or a quality aluminum weld. The tradeoff is speed and skill. TIG is generally slower than MIG, and the result depends heavily on the person holding the torch.

So if your work is mostly structural steel and thick plate, TIG may be overkill. But if aluminum, stainless, or appearance-critical work is a real part of your business, get a serious TIG machine like the Kemppi MasterTig range rather than a small multi-purpose box that does TIG as an afterthought.

What does an IR welding machine mean?

I get this question more than you'd expect. In this context, IR usually means infrared, and infrared welding is a plastic joining process, not a metal arc welding process.

An infrared welding machine heats thermoplastic surfaces until they soften and fuse together. You see it in pipe welding, packaging, and some plastic repair work. It does not produce an arc and it won't weld steel, stainless, or aluminum.

If you're searching for a machine for metal fabrication and the term IR welding machine came up, check the material description first. For metal, you need MIG, TIG, or stick welding equipment. Kemppi focuses on electric arc welding, which is why you won't see infrared welding machines in the Kemppi range.

Portable laser welding machine price and features: the honest version

Portable laser welding gets a lot of attention, and some of it is justified. A handheld laser can make clean, fast welds on thin stainless steel and aluminum with low heat distortion. If you do repetitive sheet metal work, it can be a useful addition to the shop.

On price: based on quotes we've seen, entry-level portable laser systems around 1.5 kW usually sit in the $10,000 to $18,000 range. More powerful 2 kW to 3 kW systems often run from $20,000 to $30,000 or more. Verify current pricing with actual vendors because this market changes quickly.

On features, the things that matter are laser power, water cooling, safety features, and whether the unit supports filler wire. But here's the part that doesn't fit the marketing: many portable laser welders work best on tight, clean joints. They don't tolerate gaps the way MIG does because there is often little or no filler metal to bridge them. A MIG welder can fill a slightly open joint. A laser usually can't.

You also need a class 4 laser safety plan: proper eyewear, screens, and sometimes permits depending on your workplace rules. And for code work, don't assume a laser weld qualifies under the same procedure as MIG. Check with your customer before spending the money.

My honest take: a portable laser is a specialized tool, not a replacement for a good MIG welder. If one machine has to handle a wide range of work, buy a solid MIG/TIG setup first. Add a laser later if the work justifies it.

My welder died before a deadline. What do I do now?

When I'm triaging an equipment emergency, I ignore the sales talk and work through a short list:

  1. Can it be repaired in time? If the answer involves waiting for a circuit board or a specialist technician, assume it won't be ready for your deadline.
  2. What exactly do you need? Voltage, process, wire type, gas, and duty cycle. A machine that arrives with the wrong drive rolls or a missing gas connection doesn't save you.
  3. Who can support it locally? In a rush, the vendor with the nearest spare parts is more valuable than the one with the lowest price.

A while ago, a fabricator called about a nine-year-old wire feeder that died on a Thursday. The repair quote was not crazy, but the part would take twelve days. The customer had eight days before a penalty clause kicked in. We put together a Kemppi package that afternoon, and they picked it up on the way home.
